Today’s Past

Our best days are always behind.
Who will recall such hallowed lines?
It’s all now past as if never
Part of the now gone forever.

Even these words are long since gone:
All hate and love have both fallen.
Rest and silence now rule again;
As rest rests in silent ruin.

It’s all on lease to be returned;
All that you’ve gained and slowly learned.
“Borrowed,” not “bought,” is key to know
As you enjoy your joy and woe.

If all is past, then why delay
In what you seek to own today?
